One option is for a family member who is willing and able to move in and assist the
senior or disabled individual. Given the choice most people needing full-time in-home
care would pick this option. It allows the individual to remain in their home where
they are most comfortable and relaxed. This is not a decision to be taken lightly.
There are many factors for the individual and the family caregiver to discuss.
Before A family member becomes the primary caregiver they should weigh out all the
pros and cons of accepting this responsibility. This requires the family caregiver
to be dedicated and to understand what really takes to perform this task. Family
caregivers often overlook the differences of the individuals personality and their
own. Visiting aunt Kate for short periods of time every so often does not give you
the full picture of what your differences might be. Along with aging the senior often
become more independent and set in our ways. In other words they can be very stubborn
at times. They say patience is virtue and I assure you the family caregivers will
be tested. You also may be responsible for bathing, dressing and other hygienic duties.
Meals can be another problem. Many times the senior cannot or will not eat the same
food as the family caregiver so be ready to prepare multiple meals as needed. Be
sure that you are willing to make the commitment necessary for this wonderful thing
you are about to undertake.
The cons include; giving up or changing your present lifestyle. This will be the
family caregivers biggest challenge. Be prepared for multiple doctors visits sometimes
multiple visits in the same week. Differences in food choices, television programming
and sleeping hours. Cooking, dressing and hygiene duties. Also be prepared to swallow
your pride and not be right all the time...
The pros almost always outweigh the cons. Being able to help your loved one stay
in their home where they feel safe and secure is the greatest thing a family caregiver
can accomplish. Seeing the smile on their face and the light in their eyes is all
the reward anyone will ever need. The family caregivers will always be the number
one choice of the senior....
